A New Obsession

Scott DochertyArt News, Personal

Life is always surprising me, and I try to bow to reality whenever it turns things upside down.    I decided many years ago to proceed as though the Universe is intelligent, and we are constantly presented with choices that we must make for better or worse.  In regard to producing visual art, what does that mean?  Here are examples of choices I made.  A switch from abstract art to realism in my late twenties, because I was absolutely haunted by the belief that I was too limited in my range of subject and needed to start all over and gain some competency in realism.  It cost me a lot because I lost all those who loved what I had done, but it gave me enough skills to be employed by Mcmenamins for 30 years, which was a fabulous experience in so many ways.  After retiring from that job, a switch back to abstraction, what I call, structural abstraction, because I needed this new form of expression.  This was another difficult switch for people who liked what I had at Mcmenamins and my personal gallery work of surreal images and landscapes, which I still adore.

Now I have a new obsession, which might last a while or breeze through briefly.  I don’t know.  All I know is that this pulls me along with it and I might as well let it keep me inspired and energized.

I call these House /Home  paintings.
